It all Started When I Began a Love Affair with Words…
Growing up, I was surrounded by hundreds of books because my mom had a rather vast home library, with titles ranging from epic fantasies and great love stories, to cherished classics and scholarly studies on art, history, and religion. My thirst for knowledge kept coming and it was then that I knew books would become my lifelong best friends. From the time I could hold a pencil, I’ve been writing. At just six years old I proudly drafted my first short story about a little girl who visits an alternate world through a secret portal in her back yard. When I was 11, I won my first statewide young writer’s competition and by 14 I had read works by Lewis Carroll, Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Frost, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, J.D. Salinger, Richard Matheson, Stephen King (part of IT…the sheer size of the volume was a bit daunting for me back then), Neil Gaiman, C.S. Lewis, and many more. Every birthday, holiday and special occasion, I always received special pens and journals to write my countless stories in. Over the years, my love for words grew and it became living part of me.
Shaping a Passion into a Career
Since those early days, I’ve never stopped writing. In college I landed my first freelance writing gig and began building my portfolio, which included articles, news stories, press releases, marketing brochures, and web content. In college, I was an editor for a local literary magazine, and later transferred to Florida State University where I was a contributing writer and editorial assistant for the National Literary Journal The Southeast Review. I graduated with honors from FSU with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Psychology. After graduation, I have continued to work as a corporate copywriter, professional editor, and marketing consultant for clients in travel, real estate, law, and other industries.
In my Eyes, Creativity Never Dies
Through everything, I knew I always wanted to write and publish a novel (or two or twenty). Back in 2002, I decided to start writing fantasy. After a brief hiatus, starting a family, and many further rewrites, my debut novel Immortal Descent, was complete. I have also worked on outlines for over a dozen other story ideas that I plan to write in the future. In 2017, my novel was picked up by the publisher Clean Reads and it will be in print this upcoming Spring of 2018! You can view all of my written works by visiting my Written Works page.
Aside from writing, I am passionate about art, food, travel, history, psychology, and music (especially instrumental scores and epic soundtracks, which I listen to while I write ;)). I am also a huge believer in the powerful mantra of “mind over matter” and the benefits of positive thinking. Oftentimes, I’ll be heard saying “mind over matter, pen over paper.” Originally from Southern California, I have traded in the dry heat, Mexican food, brown mountains, and beach bonfires of the golden coast for year-round tropical weather, frequent alligators, and a giant mouse (yes, Mickey…), where I live among the beaches of Florida with my husband Brian, daughter Amber, and chihuahua Dixie.
